The point is, eventually not even experts will understand what it's doing

Like I've said before i don't necessarily think it's bad that they're raising the minimum age for these sites, but since when does that mean they have to check ids? There's been a minimum age of 13 for decades and that never meant you had to upload your id

That's because the sites put that there to claim they had a rule or whatever. If this new limit is being enforced on them with the intention that it is actually effective, there clearly has to be some way of checking it or kids will just click through - I remember that being parodied in the South Park movie, which must be 25-30 years old now.

I think just pointing out that it's still in stage 1 so it makes sense that it's not supported in every runtime yet

I love this. Very cool that it made the front page and therefore has an entry for itself. I wonder if the summary could be updated again so that it includes a reference to itself in its summary of itself

Great layout on mobile, but not so great on wider screens, I find it hard to scan as well

> As much as libertarians chafe against it, I think we've demonstrated that something has to be done in relation to children online

Just cuz today's ad-supported social media is bad for kids, doesn't mean everyone should have to verify their identity to use it. You can just make it 18+ and if kids lie to get around it that's not the end of the world. And in general, regulations that would make these things better for everyone would be better rather than just saying kids can't use it and not fix the actual problems with them

Kids also tend to live with their parents, who much to their chagrin can usually confiscate stuff the kid bought and not let them use it

Wow this is smart politically because the largest group against this age verification bulls*t just so happens to overlap a lot with people who love open source software (technical people who value user freedom)

Of course this also means that the nerds who use linux or lineageos get to win cool points because they can access more adult stuff

Could just be a "follow the dominant political ideology so you feel included" thing as an evolutionary trigger to avoid being ostracized, which would cause this trend if the studies are being done around university campuses

Wasn't there a Chinese ai startup that got bought recently but the government wouldn't let the founders leave china? I think stuff like that would have an effect on valuation

Yeah, Manus were supposed to be acquired by FB, but the Chinese government nixed it.

long-term a very smart move to block it.
