I don't think this is surprising. If the utility function that is optimized by companies is profitability, the typical lifetime just above the warranty time is the result. In some sense that's expected from companies that have shareholders and so on.

Whether one can do something about it ? I guess one can enforce warranty times to be longer for example. For sure that'll make things more expensive, but probably not by much. Maybe there are other solutions (like asking to collect statistics on life-times of appliances for easier comparisons), but the key is to put that factor in the company's calculations.
