These kind of guidelines always fail short that there isn't one UNIX.

There is POSIX, and then whatever each OS that implements it decided to do, beyond what isn't explicitly required for UNIX trademark certification.

Hence why it is so much "fun" writing portable code across UNIX/POSIX platforms.
