Show HN: Underthreaded – The Brand for Engineers
3 points by luclom on Aug 27, 2024 | hide | past | favorite | 4 comments
We've noticed a lack of quality engineering clothing. Sure, there's the standard t-shirt with code snippets and references, but that's not our style.

So we created Underthreaded: a brand specifically for engineers. We make clean clothing that you can wear anywhere - if you're like us and there's no distinction between work and normal clothing.

We've always loved FOSS and quality, free learning resources. They've been essential to our careers. To give back, we will be donating a portion of our profits to open source projects (see our initial choices and reasoning here https://underthreaded.com/blogs/tech/how-we-support-open-sou....)

Also, we have also starting a curated list of blogs to check out that you find here https://github.com/underthreaded/blog_list.

Let us know what you think!

I think the designs are basic and don’t seem tech specific. I can get the same things from known high-quality brands/manufacturers for the same or less more quickly. Why should I buy these?

Fair points! Our difference is that every item bought through us donates money to free open software projects. And wearing our stuff shows that.

Our designs are basic intentionally. Although, we prefer to call them "minimal" instead! We prefer more simple, less flashy designs--that's just our view on style. We do hope to get more designs in the future, too. Still in the early stages!

Basic/minimal designs are fine, but just by looking at the brand logo the buyer isn't really showing that he supports free open source projects, at least right now. Perhaps adding some tech-specific designs, as the other user suggested, would help associate your brand with that. I wish you the best.

Thanks for the feedback! The plan is to have the brand synonymous with supporting FOSS projects, which will hopefully come over time. We're also looking into different designs that can show this more clearly, but we still want to keep our design ethos of keeping it more minimal and avoiding the current tropes of "engineer clothing"
